Kupffer cells are required for platelet-mediated hepatocellular TPO generation
University of Toronto
Direct contact for thrombopoietin generation is challenged by the separation of circulating sinusoidal platelets from hepatocytes by a fenestrated endothelial barrier. The role of Kupffer cells in the generation of thrombopoietin is unknown. Karakas uses this presentation to discuss if Kupffer cells contribute to TPO generation independently or in concert with hepatocellular protrusions. Findings will be discussed about the critical role of Kupffer cells for thrombopoietin generation via facilitating platelet-hepatocyte contact. The lessons learned from this presentation allow for refined thrombopoietin agonist therapies for patients with thrombocytopenia.
