ISTH announced new editor for its open access online publication, Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH)

The International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) announced Michael Makris, M.D., as the new editor-in-chief for its open access online publication, Research and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis (RPTH), providing an online dedicated home for science and discourse among researches, clinicians, nurses, allied health professionals and patients. The incoming editor will work alongside the current editor-in-chief and begin his 2024-2027 term on January 1, 2024.

RPTH serves as a catalyst for global discussion of scientists, clinicians, along with patients, to discuss the latest findings and research in the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis. In 2021, RPTH was accepted into the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) qualifying it to receive its first Impact Factor of 5.953. RPTH ranks 24th overall in the Hematology subject category and 16th in the Peripheral Vascular Disease category.

“We would like to thank RPTH’s current editor-in-chief, Mary Cushman, M.D., M.Sc., for her significant achievements in launching RPTH at the ISTH 2017 Congress and securing its first Impact Factor. Her contributions have paved the way for a bright future for RPTH,” said Flora Peyvandi, M.D., Ph.D., ISTH President. “We are excited to announce Michael Makris, M.D., as the incoming editor-in-chief and look forward to his dedicated leadership in this role. We are confident that his contributions will continue to elevate RPTH’s impact as one of the most innovative journals in our field.”

Michael Makris, M.D. is a Consultant Haematologist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield and an Emeritus Professor of Haemostasis and Thrombosis, University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. He previously served as editor of the Haemophilia journal from 2010 to 2018 and currently serves on the editorial board of the British Journal of Haematology, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Blood Transfusion, Seminars in Thrombosis and Haemostasis, as well as RPTH.

“I am grateful for the trust placed in me and look forward to beginning my role as editor-in-chief of RPTH. I believe the future of publishing is the Open Access model and the exciting possibilities that come with it. I look forward to building on the unique identity of RPTH in disseminating and engaging around science published in the journal,” said Michael Makris, M.D. “In addition to commissioning more topical reviews, letters to the editor, and encouraging the publication of more guidelines, a priority will be to expand on RPTH’s novel publishing features like illustrated reviews to make science more accessible. I am also a great believer in using social media to expand the reach of articles published in journals. RPTH already does an excellent job in these areas thanks to my predecessor’s outstanding vision and editorial leadership. It is an honor to further contribute to enriching the overall impact of RPTH and experience for all readers of the journal and beyond.”

The ISTH Publications Committee conducted a thorough selection process under the leadership of Wolfram Ruf, Committee Chair, and Cécile Denis, Committee Co-Chair, attracting many qualified candidates and applications with the successful appointment of Michael Makris, M.D.
